The Hanover Essential Tee - The New Essential Tee
Hanover Black Essential Tee Shirts
You don’t need another tee that fades, stretches, or loses its shape. Hanover makes a wide variety of tee shirt colors - and two that fall within the "black tee" umbrella: True Black and Sunwashed Charcoal. The result is a soft, 100% cotton tee and that's made in Los Angeles in two distinct washes—each one designed to feel perfect on day one and wear even better over time.
Choose True Black for a richer, deeper tone with subtle texture. Or go with Sunwashed Charcoal for a more casual, worn-in feel. Either way, you’re getting the kind of everyday black tee that makes every other one feel like a backup.
What's more there are also graphic tees that are printed on our black tees so there's really something for everyone.

How to Style Hanover’s Black Tee
The beauty of the black tee is its versatility. Keep it minimal or dress it up—both versions work.
-
Pigment Black: Tucked into trousers or layered under an Oxford or blazer. A sharper look.
-
Vintage Black: With cargos, shorts, or jeans. A softer, more relaxed vibe.
-
Either way, it plays well with everything in your closet.

Black Tee FAQs
What’s the difference between the two finishes?
Pigment-dyed is deeper, with a dressier look. Vintage-washed feels more casual and broken-in. Both are made in the USA from the same cotton and fit.
What makes Hanover’s white tee different from other brands?
It's incredibly soft but also 100% made from cotton so it doesn't have any of that artificial polyester feel—it’s built to last. Made in the USA, pigment dyed or vintage-washed for that lived-in feel, and cut with just enough structure to hold its shape after dozens of wears.
Will it shrink or fade?
Nope. It’s garment-washed to prevent shrinkage and maintain color integrity—especially for black.
What’s the fit like?
Classic. Room in the shoulders, trim through the body. Not too boxy, not too slim.
Can I wear it in the summer?
Yes. It’s breathable midweight cotton—great for hot days and easy to layer when it cools off.
Where is it made?
Woven, cut, sewn, and finished in Los Angeles, California. Every step happens in the U.S.
How do I care for it?
Cold wash. Tumble dry low or hang dry.
What does a t-shirt look good with?
The tee shirt is the anchor to your outfit. It can be worn under an oxford, with jeans or trousers, or solo. Need inspiration? Check our Instagram.
What if I’m between sizes?
Our fit runs true with a slightly relaxed silhouette. We also offer exchanges to help you land the right size. We make sizes from Small to Triple Extra Large (XXXL).
Hanover Compared to the Rest
Buck Mason & Polo Ralph Lauren
Hanover is all made in the USA, and our product quality is what you typically find with brands charging north of $100 a tee. We're able to make this work beacuse we're a small team with great preexisting working relationships with our factories. Our tees are roomier and are a more classic fit than Buck Mason; our fabric is also higher quality. Polo Ralph Lauren is far more mass-produced; our products are more bespoke and made for today's guy instead of relying on past legacy.
Gildan & Hanes
Gildan and Hanes are low-quality mass-made tees by design; they're produced that way because they're just trying to make the cheapest shirts possible and dominate the bottom of the market. They are best used as undershirts. Hanover tees are made in the USA and made from better fabric, with better construction, for an overall better feel. You'll never worry that you look like you're wearing an undershirt outside with Hanover.
Aimé Leon Dore
Hanover focuses on the unique elevated look that we get from pigment dyed fabrics and colors, subtle branding, and a classic fit. ALD is typically for guys looking to rep the logo graphics, Hanover is for guys looking for quality tees that won't go out of style
Is this a luxury tee?
If “luxury” means zero shortcuts and attention to detail—yes. But at under $60, Hanover gives you a luxury feel without the price tag.
How does Hanover compare to Vuori or J.Crew?
Hanover is different than Vuori, we don’t use polyester fabrics to achieve softness, just the best quality cotton and dying techniques. Our fit is also more classic, so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a workout shirt. Hanover is an upgrade on J.Crew in terms of product origin and cut; it looks better alone with jeans, and the quality holds up better over time. Our tees are made in the USA using better fabric, smaller runs, and tighter fit control. We’re not chasing trend cycles—we’re making core pieces that actually last.
Is Hanover similar to James Perse?
James Perse is known for softness and luxury pricing. Hanover uses the same caliber of U.S.-grown cotton and domestic manufacturing—without the $100+ price tag. You're getting premium fabric and finish, but with a more classic fit and cleaner branding.
How does it stack up against mfpen or Ladywhite Studio?
Mfpen is artful, minimalist, and Euro-made. Ladywhite Studio is one of the few real Made in USA basics brands. We admire them both. Hanover tees are cut with a bit more ease, priced more accessibly, and dyed in pigment tones as well as vintage washes that age beautifully. Our cut is slightly roomier as well, so it looks good whether you work out or not.
Is Hanover a good alternative to The Row or Mr Porter brands?
If you’re shopping The Row or Mr Porter for quiet luxury, Hanover delivers a similar level of quality—without the markup or logo play. Our tees are cut, sewn, and dyed in LA from premium cotton and designed to feel intentional, not indulgent.
How does Hanover compare to Noah or Kith tees?
Noah and Kith are much more logo and graphics-driven. They also don’t make their products in the USA. Hanover is about fabric, fit, and construction. We focus on timelessness, not trends. If you’re looking for something without loud logos, wearable every day, and built to last, we’re probably more your speed.
