United States by Dana Lixenberg

United States is Dana Lixenberg's book from 2001 — a collection of her editorial work from the '90s. Dana came over from Amsterdam on a magazine assignment in 1992 to cover the aftermath of the Rodney King riots and never really left. What started as a job turned into 22 years of going back to Imperial Courts, the housing project in Watts — watching kids grow up, people die, people go to prison. She spent the next decade moving through America with a large-format field camera shooting everyone from celebrities like Jay-Z to Kim Gordon, to people with nowhere to go.

You'd know her Tupac and Biggie photos even if you don't know her name. Those images became murals, tattoos, bootleg shirts on Canal Street.

Here we pulled some scans of our favorite shots featuring Elliot Smith, Iggy Pop, John Mcenroe, Willem Dafoe, Whitney Houston, John Torturro, Senn Penn and more.
